Silk - From Cocoon to Rug

Silk is made from the cocoon of a silk worm. Turkey is famous for beautiful rugs made from both wool and silk. On our recent visit to Turkey we saw a demonstration of the entire process.

First the cocoons are boiled so the stickyness that gives the cocoon its shape dissolves, and the fine threads can be unwound.

The threads are unwound onto this device which is somewhat similar to a wheel used for spinning wool into yarn. Then they are spun together with the device in the background into thicker yarn.

The white yarn is dyed.

Then the dyed yarns are woven together following a pattern to create a beautiful rug.
